FAMILY INVOLVEMENT

TEAM WORK

It is the belief at Desert Trails Preparatory Academy that if everyone; staff, scholar, and families work together there will be no room for failure. As a team, we can all work together to help all scholars achieve great academic growth and accomplishments.  We appreciate, enjoy, and value families and the support they provide.

VOLUNTEERING

Many families enjoy coming to campus and volunteering during school hours.  This takes many forms including helping in their child’s classroom, running school-wide activities, and helping in the library.  Volunteering is a great way to get to know your child’s teacher, school staff, and the school on a deeper level.  Volunteering also allows families the ability to help their child, classmates, and schoolmates.  We encourage and invite families to come in and volunteer.

Prior to volunteering there is a simple form we ask you to complete.  You may download this form, or come into the office to pick one up. Once this is completed and submitted with a copy of your identification it takes 1-2 weeks to process.  You will get a phone call that your paperwork has cleared.  You will then be asked to come in to complete a confidentiality form, then schedule with the classroom teacher the best days and times to volunteer.  You are asked to keep your volunteering to no more than 2 hours a day.

VISITOR POLICY

For the protection of the scholars and the security of the school, visitors and parents on campus must check in with the office first. Visitors and parents who will be visiting any other part of the school will be given a name tag for identification while on campus. It is against our school policy for visitors or parents to go directly to classrooms before, during, or after school without checking through the office first.

COFFEE WITH THE PRINCIPAL

Coffee with the Principal is an open invitation to all parents and guardians of Desert Trails Preparatory Academy scholars. The design of this monthly gathering is to provide an open forum of communication between home and school. During these monthly meetings topics that in the past have been covered through the Parent Council meetings and an English Language Advisory Committee (ELAC) will be covered through the Coffee with the Principal.

Coffee with the Principal meetings are held on the last Thursday of each month at 8:30am in our Multi-Purpose Room (cafeteria). These meetings typically last between 30-60 minutes.

ELAC

English Learner Advisory Committee, or also known as ELAC is designed to provide parents and guardians the opportunity to:

1. Learn more about the programs offered to their children.
2. Participate in the schools’ need assessment of students, parents, and teachers.
3. Provide input to the Principal and school staff of the most positive and effective strategies for teaching English Learners.
4. Provide input on the most effective ways to support full participation of English Learners in all school activities.
5. Provide input on the most effective ways to ensure regular school attendance.

These topics, and additional ones, will be addressed at the monthly Coffee with the Principal meeting.  ELAC is included in the Coffee with the Principal meeting.
